Southwest Illinois | There are lots of variations. In general if you count rows x length x ears per acre / seeds per bushel you will get a reasonable estimate of yield. For example a sample has an average number of of rows at 15.75 times an average of 34 long times 29,000 ears per acres divided by 90,000 seeds per bushels gives a yield estimate of 172.5 bushel per acre. In general you can get a decent sample to determine rows and length as well as ears per acre. The real wild card which is very tough to get is the seeds per bushel. If you take the above example and change seeds per bushel to 100,000 which in Southern IL would represent a somewhat smaller than normal kernal size you estimate drops to 155 bushel per acre. Thats a big drop in estimated yield for a relatively small change in kernal size. Some varieties tend to set larger or smaller kernals than other, so getting this correct is very tough. | |
