SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ | Don't think tillage has anything to do with it. My corn on corn has lots of residue between the rows.I think that corn just takes more moisture out of the ground and deeper from last year than beans do. Extra deeper N from soybeans could be the factor also. Corn after alfalfa this year, total train wreck.Sidedress corn wether after beans or corn is not as good either as spring or fall applied N. There was no rain after sideress to get the N working. There is a field of 30 inch no-till beans not far from me that don't look very good and never have all year.
Its so dry I don't think saving the little bit extra from no-till or strip till would make any difference. One hot windy day will take it all. We have been lucky its not been real windy with the heat.
I have one farm that has gotten about 3 inchs more than the rest and the drill beans there are holding the moisture in really well. If you want to talk water holding ability I will say that minimum till drill beans will hold water better than 30 inch strip till beans with residue in hot dry weather.
I would never give up my narrow rows from a yield standpoint and ease of combining and less shatter. This year it will be very interesting how 30's compare to narrow on yield. Past history tells me 3 to 5 better for narrow in my plot work in dry conditions. | |
