Sioux County, IA | Jim, I would echo your thoughts on continuous corn. Last year continuous corn produced our best yield. So far our continuous corn is doing very well. I do think strip till has something to do with that. Most of our corn on corn is strip tilled this year. The biggest problem we have with the dry conditions is that no moisture = no biologic activity. Now that we've gotten some rain it will be interesting to see how the crop responds. Last our strip tilled corn on corn fields put the bloom on late as the August rains allowed the biological activity to release the N to the corn plant. The result was fantastic late season plant health and kernel fill. Whether we get the same thing this year remains to be seen.
I am sold on strip tilled corn on corn. Don't have all the bugs out yet, but we'll get there. | |
