Subject: RE: Dryland corn farmers

north central Oklahoma
I honestly think we were looking at 120-140 or better corn last year here in northern Oklahoma, that is, right up until the end of June. We had the prettiest, greenest corn I had ever seen, and most setting two ears. Then July and August arrived in normal fashion, HOT and DRY. This year is definitely an abnormality for this area with all the rain we have had. Many corn acres last year abandoned, average upland, maybe 40, river bottom if lucky to have any, 70-80. Too many days of 100 - 105 heat. Corn generally performed better than sorghum as it seems to root deeper, hence the reason why I still try to grow it, but this year our philosophy of early planting to mature before the August heatwave bit us in the butt. One could have planted corn at any time this year and done well, if he could have found a dry day between all the rains.
