1988 was a bad drought year for us. Corn on one farm was chest-high with no ears -- only smut where the ear tried to form. We baled some of it and fed it to the cattle. (Still have a couple bales left for souvenirs.) The rest was chopped for silage. I remember how quiet the blower was without ears going through it. The ensilage was very dark from the smut -- like it had coal dust in it -- but the cattle liked it and did well on it and the corn hay. A nitrate test might be a good idea.
