Subject: Re: Wheat seed question

Hanford, CA
Not a seed dealer, just worked in developing cotton varities for a number of years and have a master's degree in genetics. The reason old varieties are used in breeding to introduce certain characteristics that are desired, but also to break gene blocks that are caused by continual inbreeding. In cotton, we used old world genetics and of even different species, but it was to introduce new host plant resistance. As far as the old varieties bred for the average and the new varieties bred for certain areas?...that is the case with some companies...as it was back in the day.
