Subject: RR Alfalfa Hot Line

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has opened a toll free hotline for alfalfa growers who want to know the locations of Roundup Ready alfalfa fields near to them. APHIS director of regulatory operations Tom Sim says the hotline was set up after a court order barring any more planting of Roundup Ready alfalfa along with guidelines for the movement and handling of it.

"A caller provides the operator with a mailing address or the location of one of their fields or their farm and in just a couple of minutes the operator then is able to provide the caller with the distances from their location to the nearest five Roundup Ready fields that may be in their county or any adjacent counties.”

Eight thousand fields have already been identified. Callers using the toll free number, 866-724-6408 must be alfalfa farmers.

"It’s not intended to be a discussion forum about biotechnology or Roundup Ready alfalfa or any other specific product so it just has that sole purpose of providing location information.”

The hotline is up from 9 am to 5 pm, eastern time, Monday through Friday.
