For a moldboard plow to work correctly the operating depth MUST be 1/2 of the width of cut. If you run shallower then the soil would tend to be "ribboned" in place of being "pulverized". Moldboard "ribbons" can become a nightmare to work down and without the proper "pulverization" I would have serious questions over the "kill" from tillage, esp with a deep rooted(tap rooted) crop. If moldboard tillage is a must in your rotation, I would suggest deep and fast.
