Subject: RE:fertilizer placement?

Driftless SW Wisconsin
Are you putting down fertilizer with the planter?

We had a situation a couple years ago where on a 12 row planter where 6 rows barely came up and the other 6 rows were fine. Farmer called in seed dealer, seed dealer blamed the row cleaners,....etc.

Well, after driving a couple hundred miles we find that the customer was putting down a lot of fertilizer with the planter. The fertilizer coulters were WAY to close to the seed row, even on the flat. But when on any kind of slope the planter crabbed to the side a bit.

Because 6 of the fertilizer coulters were RH & 6 were LH units on the other side of the seed when on a side slope 6 rows crabbed away from the fertilizer and 6 rows crabbed TOWARD the fertilizer. The 6 rows on top of the fertilizer FRIED.

It sounds similar to your situation. If you have fertilizer coulters on a 1770 planter mounted up front off of the add-on bars they may need to be moved farther from the seed, especially if you have fields with slopes and curves.

Please be careful in prematurely blaming the seed company or the planter or whatever in a public forum. jmho.
