Subject: RE: Type of N in DAP

Little River, TX
DAP = Di ammonium Phosphate.
Ammonium is a cation, while phosphate is an anion, as is Nitrate. so you will not see a phosphate nitrate only an ammonium phosphate or an ammonium nitrate. Phosphate can and will also attach to calcium to form a calcium phosphate.
A nitrate is immediately available and also can immediately leach in the soil. Ammonium can and will attach to clay and organic particles just as Potash, Magnesium, calcium, and sodium. This way ammonium is not immediately available, and becomes a slow release fertilizer.

Over simplified but close.
