I think it's a combination of quite a few responses. When I 1st started growing beans it was easy to hit 55 bpa . I don't think weather is as large a factor as diseases, insects, and a tight rotation. We had near perfect weather in our area and yields are just OK. Lower to mid 50's. If you had SDS it was a lot worse. 15 years ago we had never heard of a lot of these diseases or insects we now have. Genetics may be better for yield , but you couldn't prove it by me! Several things that have improved greatly are lodging and shattering restistance. Beans used to shatter like crazy by late Oct. Not anymore. Many fields used to be so flat you could barely combine in both directions. Breeders have made much bigger improvements to corn yields then to beans it seems.
