Gettysburg, PA | I think Ed hit the nail on the head. You know the old saying (what was that movie?) "Build it and they will come." Provide the right "habitat" and you'll get all the right "livestock" there you need (even some you don't). Tillage is like a tornado through a trailer park. It will annihilate all the "knooks and crannies" the bacteria and fungus and bugs and worms want in a healthy soil. Crop residue and roots are their food, but, you can't give it all to them at once (ie. tilling it into the soil) or they will overpopulate, eat it all up and then starve to death. Rather allow them access to the a little at a time as they "pull" it in from the surface. Add cover crops where you can (as Ed said a real challenge sometimes) in order to make sure they got enough food to survive (that soybean residue or wheat stubble might not cut it). Again, build it (in this case healthy soil) and they will come! | |
