Subject: Another one of those non-universal truths

In this area we have a fair number of farmers who plant orchardgrass mixed with alfalfa (dairy forage - mostly haylage, but some is also baled). Lately, guys have been complaining that the orchardgrass is not staying in the stands. Planted as mixed stands, they are ending up as pure alfalfa - not at all what they want. We conclude it is a combination of factors; more guys are going to rotary-style heads as opposed to sickle bar heads. These rotary heads are allowing them to cut closer to the soil. Cutting at a lower heighth is stressing out the orchardgrass and it is leaving the stands. Recommendation: raise - not lower - the cutting heighth.
