Thumb of Michigan | If I recall, we sprayed less than a week later. Reason was that Valor was in the mix and needs to be on before the beans come up. We added Gramoxone to take the rye. In the pics, the weathers pretty gloomy. Stayed that way for a long time after, Gramoxone didn't work real well w/o some sunshine. Since then, we've been using Glyphosate and Valor.
Jake, we talked on the phone last winter about crimping rye- I think you had some pics of that sort of thing going on with a Deere drill. We do see some of that effect next to the row because of the guage wheels. I'm not advocating that it will provide enough control on its own, but it does help. Tire tracks are just about completely controlled because of the crimping deal.
We normally don't let the rye get quite that big, biggest concern is it being a haven for bugs. Yes, the rye was beginning to get some heads. In the case of those pics, we were having an awful time getting ground dry enough to plant. For what its worth, many conventional till neighbors, and even some no-tillers w/o cover crop, were forced to wait to let ground dry. Looks pretty hairy, but the soil conditions were pretty good at that time because the rye helped wick up some H2O. Ultimately, we did gain a few bushels over not having rye in that year. Not because of the rye per se, but because we could plant earlier. | |
