on our pumpkin patch we find that the best bug control is to rotate your patch. we found out the hard way a few years back when the bugs came on strong early and destroyed half of our plants. once we started rotating the fields, we saw a lot less of them. we can't justify spraying so this works best for us. sure some years the pumpkins will be a long ways away from the stand but nothing a couple high school kids can't handle. on the field right next to the stand where we place the pumpkins for pick your own, which we don't rotate, we use a 3pt spreader to apply lime as the seedlings grow....still have some bug damage but not nearly as bad otherwise.
