What color is the interior (pith). Any black on the outside of the stalk??
They can be indicators of pathogens that have entered the stalks.
Any chance they were still green when the hard freeze came through Iowa?? Not sure if it made it as far south as you, but we were in the upper 20's a couple mornings about two weeks ago.
