| Burning of dead annual crop residues is *very* different from burning partially dead perennial vegetation. The perennial vegetation burns cooler (see the post by dloc) because typically some living material is green/moist and is amongst the dead dry stuff. Also, the perennial root system is still alive, and has thoroughly anchored the soil -- so little or no erosion occurs. The perennial vegetation will soon regrow. The annual crop will not regrow until someone plants it, which is done by soil-engaging machinery -- this makes it highly vulnerable to erosion. | |
