E.Central MN | I'm a little confused. Who exactly doesn't see beyond their own doorstep? If you read the news you'll find that this issue is similar to the grain farmers burning their fields in Oregon/Washington. Sure they have valid reasons for wanting to get rid of the straw residue(wheat diseases, etc), but they are losing support from the general public by creating a public nuisance type of situation? Very few farmers across the corn belt burn corn residue anymore, so yes thats different than range mgmt where burning is a mgmt tool that is still used. I'm not in the "save the world from global warming" crowd, but I do see that we have to farm a little smarter if we want to avoid onerous regulations in the future. | |
