Subject: RE: 3rd year corn varieties

Your dealer won't know what the genetics are. Most corn hybrids have closer genetics within maturity levels than most of you would ever know. I have worked as a seed tech for years and if a dealer thinks he knows what the genetics are he is just guessing by cob color, plant type etc. I have seen two hybrids with the same mommy that can look completely different in the field. VT3just means the new expression of the three main traits of rr2, corn borer, corn rootworm protection and resistance to roundup. The older triple stack is just that an older type of expression. The larger companies find a inbred that has high yield potential and cross it with another inbred for other expressions of resistance to disease etc. The best a dealer can do is help by calling someone who knows what real resistance to grey leaf spot, and other fungus type diseases corn on corn can cause. Please try to do your own research with First type research and look for a hybrid with high resistance to diseases that occur within your area. Corn genetics are really not that diverse for the amount of acres we are producing. The high yielding varieties are based on a few inbreds that have been tweaked by the breeders.
