Subject: RE: IH DT358 engine problem

The 1256's sold on this side of the pond had IH DT-407 engines built in Rock Island, IL. But we used the Neuss D-358 in cotton strippers and a few other small tractors. None of these North American engines had external fuel lift pumps; the Bosch VE pump does has an internal rotary-vane fuel transfer pump located kind of in the front nose of the pump. It sounds to me like you have a compression problem, due to the white smoke and difficult starting. Does it start well once it has warmed up to normal temp? I would see about pulling the injectors and having them bench-checked, and also check the compression wet & dry at that time.
