Subject: Re: Air Seeder for Milo

Yield comparisons of planter vs drill for milo jump around a lot depending on weather, milo hybrid, etc. Can be 20 bu/a difference, but which way it goes depends on many factors.

It is more difficult to control seeds/acre with the drill, but it can be done. Also, it does take a somewhat heavier seeding rate with the drill (Deere 50/60/90-series gauge-wheel drills) because seed placement isn't as accurate as a planter. However, the biggest factor in stand establishment of milo in NT is seed quality (vigor), especially if milo is following a grass crop (wheat, corn, milo, etc).

I certainly wouldn't encourage corn with an air drill (or a box drill). Has been tried by lots of people over a couple decades, and the majority have gone on to own planters. Too much lost yield potential.
