Because of a hearing loss problem, I always use some form of hearing protection. Here is what works for me. In a muff, try Peltors. Currently have #101, model H7B. These have a band on the back, rather than over the top, which I find to be more comfortable and it does not scrunch your favourite hat. For ear plugs I use Howard Leight Max with the string. Can pull them out and tuck inside shirt, then you can find them and also keep them clean. Also note when installing the plugs, the proper way to do it, is to reach over your head with opposite hand and pull up on top of ear. This straightens out ear canal and allows proper insertion.....it is amazing how much quieter it is if you get them in corrrectly.
