A large portion of cars in Europe are powered by VW diesels. VW makes a diesel engine, that they call the TDI. It is most certianly not a gutless wonder and to an "average" car customer it's unobvious that it is a diesel.

I really hope that diesel power is available in more vehicles soon. I would really like a small size pickup with a diesel (like Ranger/S10/Toyota size).
