I am always amazed at how you guys manage to farm with such small amounts of moisture. Guess it's cause where I am it's simple,, no snow-no water-no farm. We average less than 6 inches a year and all our water comes from the mountains from snow. If there is a drought I simply cut back and not farm some fields period, just do weed control. It's not like we can simply plant less and get by cause we just don't get any rain in the summer. Well sometime's we get enough to screw up a field of timothy ready to bale, but not even close to enough to make even 1/2 a crop without irrigating. Amazing thou how the dang weeds grow well,,, "like weeds" even without water!! Spring planting is 2-3 months away. Only way I could start planting in the next 2 weeks would be scraping off all the snow and thawing out the ground. And, that just doesn't pencil out with $3.30/gal fuel. |
