You don't mention where you are which will affect some of the answers but this is for "here". Usually we follow corn with sunflowers and put down some N but expect them to go down and get deep fertilizer, they are excellent "scavengers". That said we normally apply 30-40 lbs of N. If you are really short on N they will show the effects. Our local ARS station has not been able to show a large yield increase for increasingly large amounts of N. Usually we shoot for around 1200-1400 lbs/ac. We have had yields run from 500-2500+ in different years. Our long term averages are in the low 1000's/ac. We notill them into the corn stalks and use spartan for residual weed control. I split the spartan from my burndown because I've had some problems with "antagonism" with the spartan and Roundup. Prices are high like everything else as they are competing for acres. Old crop "here" are being quoted at $23-29/cwt. New crop contracts are running $21+. This is for oil seeds.
