Just to add to your post, how much do we pay to subsidize the energy industry?  Now add it all in.  Add all the direct subsidies the oil companies receive.  Count what we are spending for the military to protect our supplies.  Count the value of all the soldiers' lives lost and those that are destroyed.  Now which is more important, fuel or food?  Which can you survive longest without?  Of which would you rather insure that there is no shortage?   The very few billions going to farmers sounds pretty puny, now doesn't it!
