Quincy, IL | I've seen discs used to build roads around here-cut, size and pack dirt with one tool ;).
A lot of successful farmers around here use discs and still raise good crops so your "runway analogy" doesn't mean much to me either.
I've seen lots of yield comparisons of fall vs spring nh3 and fall always wins, freeze/thaw mellows wheel tracks and takes out what compaction is there. A lot of damage is done putting it on in spring around here and usually the fall nh3 guys are planting when the others are applying nh3...this has been a huge advantage the last 3-4 years.
