Subject: Re: Shelf life of seed corn

I've seen a lot sit in a shed until the next year too and it always seemed to grow ok. If you don't mind risk then could be a good deal. The problem comes when you have an issue with a few bags and you get a poor stand. You have no replant policy and if you do decide to buy seed and replant you could already have lost yield. It could potentially cost many times more than the seed savings. Some of the seed you plant can go out of condition easier than others due to a lot of factors outside of your control. I'm not saying it's a bad idea to get it and keep it but $5 corn makes any potential problem very costly. You probably wouldn't want to plant corn with out a monitor on the planter, you spent the money for one because you wanted the best stand possible. Planting old seed is kind of like planting w/o a monitor except you don't know about the skips until the corn comes up.
