Subject: RE: Big bales vs small bales straw

Lancaster County, Pa.
I just hauled some 3x3x8 barey straw bales weighed 518 lb/bale.  What you get compared with small squares totally depends on your market. I would say in my area I might take a $10-20 hit on price, although some customers will pay just as much or more for the big bales.  A couple fellas mentioned cutting the straw.  My custom baler has a roto-cut baler and I have a customer who wants fine straw.  That works fine, but if you try it make sure it's not to fine.  It can be hard to keep the bales together.  And you sure want the knotters working good!  I try to bale some both ways, but for me the speed and convenience of the big bales is worth a lot when I can get beans in the ground quicker.
