If your soil is mostly clay it should work.

With soil similar to here 6 or 8 years of fertilizer just becomes a slow release fertilizer.
In East Texas where it rains more and the soil is mostly sand, split applications of potash is advisable, and nitrogen may not persist more than 4 or 6 weeks.
