Subject: RE: spreading p and k

SW MN and Gold Canyon AZ
I agree with gary. Banding lower rates CAN be cheaper -----SHORT TERM-----HOWEVER -----long term your test values will go down. Pay me now or pay me later. WELL---- with corn @ 5$ plus and soybeans @ 14$$$$$$$$$ WHY OH WHY would you skimp anyway??????????
Just figure your gross $$$ you have to work with. 175 bu corn @ $5.25 is $918 per acre . A few more dollars of p and K spread is not going to kill anyones budget.
I drill beans ,I want my fertility spread out not in a band.
To me its alot easier to keep soil values up in the med to high range buy spreading removal rates ,instead of draggin around starter fertilizer, slowing down planting, and having to spread anyway cause you could not put enough on with the planter in the first place. Not only that but liquid fert is alot more expensive .
So what will you gain??Anyone who banded in the last few years and now find themselves with lower soil test now have to really pay the piper to get the test values back.
To me ,I say keep it simple.
