NC Kansas | I remember when I went, we usually headed for the Throckmorton, TX (a little south of Vernon, TX) area on the 10th to 15th of May. Some years earlier, some a little later. Seems we tried to get there 5-7 days before the flag dropped to get the help used to the harvest "rig-a-ma-roll". I think that Neufeld's from Inman went out to California and they started in April. Starting to have more cobwebs than brains, so that may be a little fuzzy.
Quite a few crews make the trip a month or so earlier, than the time they start. The highways are a lot cooler and tires seem to get along a lot better. Then,,, on the way back north, they swing by their stops and check out the crops and visit their customers.
I seem to get the itch to go again every year. Wife and kids keep me home. Still nothing better than seeing a sharp crew all lined up and rolling through.
(I may get a copyright on "rig-a-ma-roll") :<)
I see by the time you posted, you're in training for those long harvest days!
We called it, "The Combine Olympics!"
