Minnesota | Pushing planting populations seems like it should be a simple way to increase yields, but there is much more to it than that. You need to make sure you have your N, P, & K at optimum levels if you want to push populations to the limit. I went to a Croplan Genetics Answer Plot last summer where they had a plot with high, medium, and low populations for the area, with several different hybrids. Under pretty favorable growing conditions, the medium population plots turned out the best. They attributed this to the fact that the potassium levels in the field were around 130 ppm, which wasn't enough to support the higher populations. When you change one input, it affects what you have to do with the others. | |
