Near-north Ontario, French River | Thistle I think its more of an issue with summer time highs then it is with winter lows for canola. We have winter canola this year ( third year growing it), and its survived -20C with no issues. Biggest problem we have had is getting it established in the fall, it doesn/t like getting its feet wet at all BEFORE emergence. If you plant and get hit with 2 inches of rain the next day the seed will rot, if you plant and it emerges then it will take quite a bit of moisture ( similar to wheat ) We havent got our N on yet, should have had it on 2 weeks ago but the weather just isnt co-operating. When the ground was froze we had too much snow to get on the land, when the snow disappeared everything went to mud, now 5 inches of snow yesterday LOL..Not getting too worried yet as Canola and winter wheat are both still dormant here so I dont think we have lost yeild potential yet . |
