Subject: Re: Pioneer newsletter about corn populations.

We did a few side by side trials using different populations of the same hybrid in the same field back in the early 2000s. At the time we compared 32k vs 34k, and 32k vs 36k but for some reason I don't think we compared the 34k vs 36k. Might have but the son runs the planetr & I don't recall (CRS :~( ).

At that time the 34k was the highest yielding of the three. 36k was second highest and the 32k was lowest. Not much difference between the 34 & 36K, 1-2 bpa at the most but about 4-5bpa difference between the 2nd highest & the lowest.

This was done on a 25 ac field that has Ipava silt loam(black) ,Sable silty clay loam (heavy black) and a couple small spots of Iona silt loam (lighter) soils.

Afterwards we bumped our populations into the 34ks. We didn't really do any wide pop. trials before going up to first 36k & now to the 37k populations other than a few random side by sides, never over a wide area. Our main thinking in pushing the pops have been more in from what we have read in research & unniversity plots along with the thinking that over the years the seed companies are continuing to better the hybrids. Also, as sag0330 stated, you need to keep trying something new.

Yes, the Kinzies, at least the 12r & 16 r splitters a have seed transmission on each end so the planter can be set for two different populations. That was one feature we missed on our previous planter as we use to plant most of our corn "whole field side by sides" Being we have gone with "strip" refuge it's a feature we don't use nearly as much.
