| I've never ran a coulter tillage tool and I really wouldn't want to run one in the spring. I really don't see what the advantage to the coulter machines are over a conventional disk other than they don't cover as much residue. The coulter machines are advirtised as not causing compaction because of the way the coulters lift but all the lifting is done above the bottom of the coulter where the compaction is caused so they are going to cause just as much compaction as a regular disk. We use a Phillips harrow, it's not perfect but we've been more than happy with it and we've seen a noticable yield increase with it in side by side plots with a field cultivator. In wet conditions even the Phillips harrow is going to cause a little bit of compaction but it's not heavy enough to cause problems and it's working above the seed depth so the roots won't have to grow through the compaction layer. | |
