| The biggest problem in Ontario is the competitive entry into the provincial vet college. Straight A's in high school and not good enough, have to have straight A+++'s, and the city girls will beat the country boys in that respect. At least 80% of this years graduating class of vets are women. This fall's first year entry is over 90% women. Not enough well-qualified farm boys can get into the college, and do they really want to chase around sick cows at all hours and weather conditions, for pittance pay compared to treating cats and dogs in an airconditoned office? And there is great demand for vets at the research level and to fill food inspection / government bueacracy roles.
We are fortunate enough to have a clinc with two farm - practicing vets (men), the other vet is a "small animal and horses only" practice (women vet). | |
