| Took after the 706 today, AMP light blinks all the time battery does not charge. Charged battery. Checked all the wiring, fixed a couple connections. Battery has 12.6V with engine off. Started engine, voltage 12.5V. Jumpered alternator F terminal to battery, idiot light went out, voltage went to 18.2, regulator started smoking on back side. Shut engine off. Removed regulator, some oily film on back side, innards looked fine, reassembled. Started engine, 12.5V, jumpered F terminal idiot light went out, voltage 18.2 again, regulator returned to smoking. Ran about 2 minutes that way, shut off.
Sometime ago on this forum someone else asked about this, seemed to me the AMP light circuit is a two way thing, light on when no charge, current reverses when charging and light goes out. For a 1960's vintage tractor this seems goofy, I can't remember the details from that discussion and wonder if anyone could help recollect?
