| We wrapped about 600 bales a year for several years with a spear type wrapper. I really don't see much difference in the quality of a spear wrapper vs a tube, and sometimes the spear wrapper can do better. The downsides to a spear wrapper are that they are slower and you use more plastic, but they are relatively inexpensive and give you a chance to learn before you plunk down big bucks on a tubeline. The spear type wrappers can also be used for wrapping dry hay with black plastic. That works like a charm, and it is probably the cheapest way to cover hay that there is.
As far as the cutter. There may be some density advantages, and those bales sure process faster in a mixer, but I'm not sure that there's enough advantage there to overcome the cost of the attachment and the extra HP, fuel, maintenance, etc that they require. I know there are one or two in this area, but there are a lot more folks wrapping hay than there are balers with cutters. | |
