Subject: The problem

You have a problemchild there, but your problem isn't going to be with the vapors inside the cylinder exploding.

99.9% of the time, when a tank cracks in this manner, the inside bottom of the tank is about rotted thru anyhow. The original design stunk, and so did the welding generally, putting phenominal extra stresses into the tank.

If you do a simple reweld on the tank, you may get away with it, and you may not, but I guarantee you will be revisiting the same problem again in the near future.

If it's your machine, and you don't want to repair it again, cut the leg completely free of the tank, and about an inch around the original weld in all directions. That will give you an opportunity to inspect the inside of the cylinder for rot. Then, weld a patch ½" larger onto the tank, of material at least as thick as the leg. Then, weld the leg back onto the patch.

Generally, most tanks flunk out of the process before the patch gets installed.
