Subject: 2001 F250 Automatic Hub Problem

North Central Iowa
I have an '01 Ford F250 with the automatic hubs on the front wheels. On the left hub, the o-ring between the plastic center that you turn and the outer housing, has gotten pinched or something and has pulled out and is sticking out between the two pieces, causing it to be really difficult to turn. I pulled the hub off and took the guts out of it, until I got to a rubber 'hat' that I assume is what actuates these automatically when they aren't locked in. Anyway, I can't figure out how to get the inner plastic piece out so I can see what I need.

I've talked to 3 Ford dealers, 2 of which have said that you can't get parts for those, and you just have to replace the hub, for $288. The third says there is a kit and gave me the part number, but none of them could tell me how to get the thing apart.

Anybody been through this before? Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike
