Subject: Re: Steel hopper bottom?

We have a 38' Drake h.b., bought it used about 4 yrs ago. Trailer is well made , which also means heavy, weighs about 2,300# more than the 43' Chamberlain alum. h.b. we rented this winter. They are built with rebuilt, used axles, might be able to get them with new now. Clean out is good and we haven't had any trouble with grain hanging up. Wiring would be better if it was run in conduit but so far have only had a couple problems. Trap doors are direct drive but not that hard to open and landing gear is 2 spd on ours. As other poster said, trap clearance is good. We have no trouble dumping into swingaway augers.

We bought ours because of pulling in & out of fields we thought we would have less problems with a steel trailer than an aluminum. Weight isn't that big of a factor for us as the elevator & processor we haul to are less than 15 miles away from our farthest fields & about 2 miles from our closest & 7 or 8 from our bins so making an extra trip isn't that big of a deal.

Draw back to steel is rust. We store ours inside when not in use & try to wash it after hauling in the winter on salted roads. Still we are getting some rust coming thru on the sides. We did spray the bottom of the hoppers with undercoating which helps.

Next trailer will be aluminum.
