Martinsville, Ohio
I have no experience with the Japanese pickups but no many who do.

The Dodge Dakota has been the most reliable, high MPG pickup for us, over 400,000 miles of experience. The 5 speed is better for us, don't particularly care for the automatic but if you peddle it, you can average 20 MPG. It will haul and pull good for its size but not like a 3/4 ton of course or a full size 1/2 ton, but close.

Cheap little pickups to purchase and run in my experience. One of the boys had the Ranger 4 cyl 5 speed, I had one also, not quite as good as the Dakota in my opinion.
