Inwood, WV | I could have written MT Farm's reply, as my father drives a similarly equipped '01 Ford Ranger shortbed, and gets the same fuel economy.
He traded an '86 Ranger for it, with nearly 200,000 miles, and all I ever had to do to it was replace the timing belt, and rebuild the carburetor. We were both pleased with that.
You may want to carefully define "light loads," however, as these things (base models anyways) have a lot more bed than they have suspension capacity.
