I want to respond to 2 things Ray (ecks) said

I think all engineering schools must have a class that teaches how to do incredibly stupid things, charge a lot and think you did a great job
My son worked at the local gas station through high school before going to Rose Hulman Institute of Technology (rated as the TOP engineering school by US News for several years).  When he announced he was quitting to go to RHIT one of his customers warned him.  Reggie said "Sometime in your Junior or Senior year they take you in a back room and beat the common sense out of you."
I've aways claimed that any engineer who designed a machine should have to try to service it himself before it goes into production.
So the story went when Massey was developing the 760 combine they built a prototype, handed an engineer a toolbox and told him to replace a certain part.  They redesigned the combine.  Don't know if it is true, but every farmer that has ever worked on a piece of equipment wishes it were true.
