Subject: RE: Answer to BigIron's question and how I'd do it

West Union, Illinois

BigIron - What do you mean by 4-1 pattern?

When you plant seed production you plant a certain number of female rows, then a male row the female on and on.  In a 4-1 pattern you would plant 4 female, 1 male, 4 female, 1 male, etc

There may be other ways of getting a 4-1 pattern on a 24 row, but this is the first I came up with.

On a 24 row planter you would have difficulty planting a 4-1 pattern.  You would need to plant the first at a half rate then double back on it.  You would not use the 24th row but would block it up and shorten the marker so 23 was the last row.

In actual practice you would block up all the male rows because the odds are the male and female would not be planted at the same time.  Then you would plant the male with a toolbar planter.

Here is a photo showing a 1-4-1 pattern
