Subject: Re: Educate me in Drill Bits

I was wondering about that myself. I have broken a lot of drill bits over the years but have never seen one that was bent.

Another possible problem for jcs might have been the type of steel he was trying to drill. I was drilling a couple pieces of thin angle today, 1/8", that was very hard. I was staring out with a 1/4" bit & worked my way up to a 3/8" and after every hole I was having to touch up the bits before starting the next hole. Was running 125rpm & using cutting oil.

I bought a Drill Doctor several years ago when they first came out & IMO it was a waste of money. It will sharpen cheap bits but won't touch the the cobalts. It sits in an old file cabinet & I sharpen my bits freehand. Anything under 1/4" I don't bother to sharpen, just buy new when they get dull.

Don't know if they are still in business but about 20 years ago the owner of athe local steel fabrication shop told me the "Green" drill bits were one of the best you can buy.
