I would use a portable AC clamp meter, available from your favourite cheap imported tool dealer. Just click the insulated loop around a single primary wire and you're done, safe for huge numbers of amps since the conducter need not touch the meter at all. If you wire up the supplied test leads, you can switch it to read voltage, too. These are battery powered units, so you have to remember to shut it off, or you can wire up a small plug-in type power supply.
