When measuring large currents it is sometimes easier to use a resistive "shunt" in the high current leg and then measure the current with a voltmeter because of the voltage drop across the shunt. Ampmeters are wired in series and the heavy current can be a problem in the meter circuit. Or go the suggested clamp on route.
