I do use a portable clamp-on amp meter. In fact I have several of them monitoring critical motors like those powering wet corn augers. Cost is in the neighborhood of $100 if I remember correctly. All that is necessary is to pull a loop of wire from one leg of the single phase circuit into a separate box. Leave enough wire to easily attach the clamp-on meter. I leave meters attached whenever we are using those motors and remove them when we shut down. It isn’t a truly permanent setup but it is all I can afford.
